We are probably all aware of the shifting nature of spaces that the LGBTQ commmunity can call their own, but facing the harsh reality of actual facts is more than a rude wake up call. E.G, in the past decade in the US over 100 bars, bookstores, and community spaces where LGBTQ women gather have closed.
This challenging situation is what filmmaker Alexis Clements examines in detail in her new documentary ALL WE’VE GOT. From where she lives in Brooklyn to the far sides of the country, Clements studied so many different women’s spaces communities in order to better understand why having a place to gather matters, particularly for marginalized groups,
It’s a very timely investigation as LGBTQ culture seems to be undergoing a seismic shift with the millennials in our community wanting to meet different needs and desires. Clement’s conversations with the owner of bars/spaces that have survived and may even have prospered is especially fascinating, particularly as at the end of the day, there is not one answer or solution.
ALL WE’VE GOT is provoking a dialogue that our community needs to have. Not just to cling on to our history of a fading bar/club culture, but appreciate how our past has shaped us so much that we should be well-prepared to plan for our futures too.
