This is one of those rare films that you know you are going you love just by the title alone. This stunning Italian actress is one of the last surviving major stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema and is the only remaining living person on the AFI’s list of the 25 greatest female stars.
Sophia Loren began her film career at age sixteen in 1950 and was still making films some 70 years later. In fact, in the 2021 filmed version of the musical NINE which was both a critical and commercial failure, Miss Loren still got some excellent reviews. In her lengthy career she has won five special Golden Globes (including the Cecil B. DeMille Award), a BAFTA Award, a Laurel Award, a Grammy Award, the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1991, she received the Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievements.
What Would Sophia Loren Do is the true story of an Italian-American grandmother and film buff who finds strength and joy in the life of her screen idol. Regina K. Scully was so impressed with how her mother Nancy Kulik had always been such a great admirer of Sophia Loren that she developed the idea of developing into a documentary,
This short film, which was not only made with Ms. Lorens’ support but also in which she appears, showcases how much of a positive impact she had on Nancy throughout her life. Having dealt with so many gay men’s obsessions with Hollywood divas, it’s actually refreshing seeing a woman at 82 years old recount the times when she looked to Sophie with such big eyes.
When Nancy gets to speak to her heroine in the film and says, “it feels like we know each other,” you will probably find yourself grabbing for a kleenex or two .
They just don’t make stars like Sophia Loren anymore.
