It’s not that we actively dislike people who are one-man-bands and who insist on showing us up with their faultless must-talents ….. it’s just it always makes us feel like sad underachievers. Or at worst, just plain tired!
The latest example to appear on our horizon is actor Jesse Eisenberg. Not content with starring in hit films such as The Social Network , which earned him nominations for the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Award for Best Actor, now he is going behind the camera. Not just to direct but also write ….. oh yes, and compose the music too
He has not approached the project half-heartedly as he gets to direct the distinguished Academy Award Winner Julianne Moore …. plus the very cute Finn Wolfhard (from Stranger Things). Moore plays Evelyn who has devoted herself to helping people in hard times, but she struggles to connect with her son Ziggy (played by Wolfhard), an aspiring internet star oblivious to the problems of the world.
As Evelyn attempts to become a parent figure to an unassuming teenager she meets at her shelter, and Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant and politically conscious young woman at his high school, this emotional comedy reveal a funny and sharply perceptive portrait of a mother and son who may seem at odds but who are more alike than either would care to admit.
Give young Eisenberg (actually he is 39 now …. who knew) his full due, the trailer that we just received is actually very funny ….. and extremely touching, As A24 the distributor is releasing the film in January during the run-up to awards season we are now wondering if they believe this time Mr. Eisenberg will this time walk away with one of those gold statuettes
