Any new film from the French queer auteur François Ozon is a major event for the Queerguru team. He is considered one of the most important directors in the new “New Wave” in French cinema, along with Jean-Paul Civeyrac, Philippe Ramos, and Yves Caumon We have been following his work, since his Fassbinder adaptation Water Drops on Burning Rocks (Gouttes d’eau sur pierres brûlantes, 2000) came the film which made his name outside France, and for which he won the prestigious Teddy Award at the Berlinale. Over the course of his career to date Ozan has been nominated over 20 times for a Cesar Award but has yet to win once!!!
Ozon’s latest film is THE STRANGER and is an adaptation of Albert Camus‘s 1942 novella The Stranger, which centers on a detached and indifferent Frenchman in French Algeria, who, weeks after his mother’s funeral, kills an unnamed Arab man in Algiers. The ensuing trial explores both the crime and his character, is considered a landmark work of existentialism and is widely regarded as Camus’s masterpiece. It is also ranked as one of the most widely read French novels in the world and has been translated into 75 languages.
The Stranger had its World premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival last September, and is do to be released in the UK on April 1oth
