The Royal Mail issue a set of comparative postage stamps to celebrate The 50th Anniversary of Londons first Gay Pride

Seemingly everything in the UK is steeped in history.  Tak the national postal service known as The Royal Mail. It started back in 1516 when Henry VIII established a “Master of the Posts”, a position that was renamed “Postmaster General” in 1710.

Upon his accession to the throne of England at the Union of the Crowns in 1603, James VI moved his court to London. One of his first acts from London was to establish the royal postal service between London and Edinburgh, in an attempt to retain control over the Scottish Privy Council.

Fast forward to the present time when it no longer has a monopoly on the nation’s postal services but most of us Brits still carry a real fondness in our hearts for the  Royal Mail.  Especially at times like this when they launched a brand new set of stage stamps to celebrate Pride.

David Gold of The Royal Mail said the designs recognize the small number of people who marched through central London half a century ago to raise awareness of discrimination and inequality. The stamps celebrate the 5oth Anniversary of London’s first Pride Parade

The stamps were illustrated by artist Sofie Birkin, while Royal Mail worked with journalist and author Amelia Abraham, and consulted with Royal Mail’s internal LGBT & Friends Network to create the project.
