The Accompanist is the feature film directing debut of actor Frederick Keeve who not only writes the script, takes the starring role, is the producer, but also composes the soundtrack. It does mean however that this queer drama lacks input from others that could have helped the film have a little less melodrama and more authenticity .
Keeve plays 50 something-year-old Dr. Jason Holden who as a result of a tragic automobile accident he is in danger of losing his family. The story is intended as part fantasy and part magical, so we are left to work out what parts are reality and what are just figments of his imagination.,
Jason has taken a job as a piano accompanist at a local ballet studio and in the early part of the film he is pursued by Brandon Wykowski (Ricky Palomino) a troubled dancer in his mid 20’s who is seeking a comeback. Jason is flattered by the attention and somewhat reluctantly agrees to play at private sessions for him.
That doesn’t sit well with Brandon’s boyfriend who is dying of cancer (Aaron Cavette). And as Brandon is now sleeping with them both it makes for one very unhappy love triangle.
There may be a complete lack of chemistry between any of the men, but there is more than enough melodrama to last the 90 mins .
The saving grace are the scenes of the dance classes (led by the late John Todd) where Keeve allows the camera to linger enough to keep us interested.
