Sister Roma is one of the original Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence the charitable, protest, and street performance movement that uses drag and religious imagery to satirize issues of sex, gender, and morality. and fundraise for charity. They came about during the AIDS pandemic in San Francisco when they provided a valuable support system, especially for all the gay men who had to cope on their own. Since then they have also raised much-needed funds for AIDS, LGBT-related causes, and mainstream community service organizations while promoting safer sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug use and other high-risk behavior.
Over the years Sister Roma has become ‘the most photographed nun in the world’ and is also the face of the Sisters as they have continued to support the LGBTQ community on so many levels and are still at the forefront of the continuing fight for equal rights, However despite the serious and important nature of her work Sister Roma has won a reputation for her larger-than-life personality and her wicked sense of humor that has rightly earned her icon status.
