Surprise a new short film written and directed by Kiff Scholl that debuted on the Dekkoo screening platform this month is one of those intriguing gay stories that engages you to the very end only to leave you wondering if it was all worthwhile.
It’s the tale of two bearded hipsters who meet at a party and whose one-night stand evolves into a three-month relationship. We learn this pretty quickly as we see how it all starts and then falls apart in a series of slightly confusing flash forwards. Rory the younger one (John Halbach) seems a tad keener than Fred (Bill Yoelin) an older bear who appears more hot and cold throughout, but frankly, none of the stances they take are totally clear, and the odd ending just compounds the confusion.
However, it is provocatively filmed showing the couple’s real physical connection through their intimacy which at least adds to its watchability.
