Spring Awakening : Those You’ve Known

By the time we saw SPRING AWAKENING  at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2007 it had already won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical. We can confidently say its one of the finest pieces of theater we have ever seen  Its also where we (and the rest of the World) fell in love with Jonathan Groff

Spring Awakening is a coming-of-age rock musical based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality.

The original case back then also included  Lea Michele, John Gallagher Jr. Lauren Pritchard Jonathan B. Wright and Lilli Cooper.  With  music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater its creative team comprised director Michael Mayer and choreographer Bill T. Jones.

Now 15 years later after the smash, the original cast and creative team reunite for a spectacular, one-night only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund.

Chronicling their whirlwind journey back to the stage, the film follows the players as they reconnect and rediscover the beauty and timelessness of the hit musical.

The documentary pulls back the curtain to showcase the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsals, in their homes and backstage. The film features electrifying performances from the reunion concert in November 2021, newly filmed interviews, candid archival video and photographs, as well as performance footage from the original 2006 show \

Directed by Michael John Warren, Spring Awakening: Those You've Known debuts Tuesday, May 3 at 9:00 p.m.
ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
