Unconventional is the new queer comedy-drama series from super talented actor/writer/producer/director Kit Williamson who brought us the fantastic Eastsiders drama series. We follow queer siblings Noah (Kit Williamson) and Margot Guillory (Aubrey Peeples) and their partners Dan Charles and Elisa Slate (James Bland (also co-director and writer) and Briana Venskus) and the challenges they have to overcome as they try to start a family as thirty-somethings in today’s insecure world.
Williamson and Bland have created a very clever series that covers serious themes – including chosen families, parental control, queer hedonism, career aspirations, parenthood, drug use, monogamy v. open relationships and highly medicated individuals – as well the sheer difficulty for creative people to survive in today’s high rent, insecure societies. They do this very subtly in a fun, sexy California stylee manner which gets their message across easily. The unapologetic in-your-face queer experience is central to each episode – something the directors feel is very important as queer representation on mainstream TV is often very vanilla.
Filmed and set in and around Joshua Tree, California, where in real life, Williamson lives with his partner John Halbach (co-star from Eastsiders), the 9 episode series has several guest stars that include Jenna Ushkowitz, Constantine Rousouli, Beau Bridges, Kathy Griffin, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Laith Ashley and Tuc Watkins. On-screen chemistry between the cast is great and combines with an excellent, very modern, thought-provoking script, sharp dialogue, good sex scenes, colorful cinematography and a great soundtrack. Plus lots of hot bodies – including Williamson who is looking super buff, and Drag Race star William Belli. What’s not to like! Highly recommended.
