Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews THE PEOPLES JOKER a manic parody by Vera Drew

THE PEOPLE´S JOKER. is a parody that is completely unauthorized by DC Comics, Warner Bros and Discovery,  and presents an autobiographical narrative of writer, editor and director Vera Drew, starring herself  as Joker the Harlequin.

All video and graphics featured in the film are original material, the story of a woman captured in a man´s  body surrounded by  absurdities, fantasy and  psychedelia, set in an imaginary and decadent  Gotham City, with odd, erratic, misfit characters from begining to end.

A statement at the start of the film says this personal coming out story is protected by Section 107 of the United States Copyright Act of 1976, which allows “fair use” for purposes of relevant criticism, social commentary or education.

An illustrated  exploration of queerness,  identity issues, childhood, parenthood, abusive relationships, romance, drama, fear, truth, multiverse and the power of laughter, all mixed up in a extravaganza of a closeted trans girl that shares a deeply personal journey with documentary echoes accentuated with black humor and lampoonery.

The unfunny clown named joker that comes of age in the so called Gotham City, where comedy has been outlawed,  is like a caricature of the Jokers  already inhabiting our imagination.  A gross exaggerated aesthetic, sometimes grotesque, adds to the 92 min feature.

The director declared that  Nicole Kidman´s scene in Joel Schumacher´s  “Batman Forever” moved her deeply,  and there is even a homage to that sequence  in her film.  The Joker´s People, is dedicated to anyone who ever had the courage to live authentically in a synthetic world created by hypocrites, let’s cheer for that.

P.S. look for the wonderful performance of Lynn Downey  in the supporting role of the mother.
