Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews SINGLE, OUT a whimsical queer Australian TV rom-com now out on DVD

This whimsical queer Australian TV Series set in Melbourne, Alberta tells about the life and loves of teenager Adam (Will Hutchins) while he explores a new world accepting himself as gay and coming out to his immediate family.  Series 1 consists of  6 twenty-minute episodes.

A well-ensembled cast of handsome diverse young men some gay and some not, and a non-binary character interacting, provide the frame and mood for this rom-com Series.  The action evolves through funny situations, Smart Phone Chat messages, and witty dialogues. Female characters are few and add to the whole.

Adam likes photography and has drawing skills, and he is preparing a solo art show; his brother  Clayton (Steven Christou)  gives massages for an extra income, they have a love-hate relationship.  Meanwhile, their mother (Juli Strini, special mention to her) drifts from one boyfriend to another.  Their father is absent.

In some chapters, dreams seem real although they are subconscious desires that may come to the surface.  The plot presents some coexistence and divergences. Friday 13th is coming and the guys want to do something spooky…  A night out maybe finding and enjoying cute fresh meat at the bar,  with a bittersweet aftertaste.  Reading between the lines, you’ll see that has complications too.

In the 20 min format every chapter is well constructed and easy to watch, with the last one highlighting Adam´s art exhibit

Australian audio-visual projects usually are refreshing and rewarding, Single, Out, written/directed by Lee Galea is not an exception. Series one  is now out on DVD
