Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews EGGHEAD AND TWINKIE a queer rom-com with a happy ending

A romcom with dashes of animation and a happy ending.  Tells the story of Vivian  – Twinkie (Sabrina Jie – A- Fa)  and her quest for identity and love in the times of Smart Phones and social media.  Twinkie shares the road (literally and figuratively) with her loyal friend Egghead (Louis Tomeo), a convenient balance in the narrative is provided by Jess (Asahi Hirano).

We learn that since Twinkie was a kid she knew about being gay. Her relationship with a dominant father (Scott Harris / Real State) and submissive mother provide the frame for her to come out of the closet while having a Sunday brunch,  and for an escape in her father´s car, driving to Texas for a big party…  At the party, Twinkie will meet her online crush, a DJ and the most popular girl on Instagram,  with whom she has been in contact, virtually only, for 6 months.   In the meantime, the seventeen-year-old Twinkie embraces her identity as a mixed- Asian woman.

Filmmaker Sarah Kambe Holland’s proposal is of the joys and pains of coming out of the closet, and the portrait of a generation that communicates through screens and text messages.

The film will be screening at Outfest Los Angeles.
