Alexandre O Philippe‘s documentary LYNCH/OZ is a must-see for every movie nerd ….. especially the queer ones. It explores how the auteur David Lynch incorporated elements and themes inspired by The Wizard of Oz (1939) into his movies. Most notably 1990’s Wild at Heart included the main character seeing a vision of Glinda among other making other Oz references that did not appear in the novel it was based on
Philippe specializes in making movies abouts making movies and his take on Lynch’s obsession with The Wizard of Oz is one of his best. He makes a point of examining how Oz’s main themes : red shoes, hollow winds, gossamer bubbles, and naïve young women in terrible trouble: are present in Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks.
Phillipe is not alone in his conclusions and to support them he includes an impressive lineup of critics, writers, and directors, including Karyn Kusama, John Waters, David Lowery, Rodney Ascher, Amy Nicholson, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead
