‘Queerguru reviews ‘AMMA’S PRIDE the story of the unwavering support of an Indian woman for her trans daughter

The derogatory term ‘third world country‘ is thankfully no longer in use, and has been replaced by modern classifications like “developing” or “lower middle-income” country, which India is. Its economic growth has led to it being classified as a major developing economy with a large overall GDP, though it still faces challenges like lower per capita income compared to developed nations
But the whole point of a new short documentary by Shiva Krish is that morality and basic human decency are not based on economic wealth but on respect for individuality that differs from the norm.  Which is a lesson that should be copied by the West ….. and in particular the US, and none more urgent than at the present

Amma’s Pride” chronicles the true story of Srija, a trans woman in a traditional small town in South India, and her fight for the legal and societal recognition of her marriage to a cisgender man, Arun. The title translates to ‘Mother’s Pride’ and the film’s central theme is the unconditional love and unwavering support Srija receives from her mother, Valli, who becomes her biggest champion against societal pressures.

This very compelling and uplifting film has been used as a tool for affirmation and allyship, screening globally to promote visibility and change. It has won multiple awards, including Best Short Documentary at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival in Kerala, making it Academy Award-qualified.

The are screenings in November of the film in India, Uk and US.  For more details and locations, visit: https://www.ammaspridefilm.com/  and https://www.instagram.com/ammaspridefilm
