When Goran Stolevski’s sophomore feature film OF AN AGE premiered at Melbourne’s Queer Film Fest this summer, it received a rapturous reception. The Guardian Newspaper was quick to declare this Australian film a modern queer classic. Now come next Valentine’s Day we will be able to see for ourselves when Focus Features releases the film in US movie theaters (and presumably in other countries too)
Openly gay Macedonian/Australian Stolevski sets the movie in Australia in the summer of 1999 when a 17-year-old Serbian-born, Australian amateur ballroom dancer experiences an unexpected and intense 24-hour romance with a friend’s older brother. The whole will-they won’t-they tension runs through the movie and keeps you hanging on to the edge of your seat until the final credits roll. It is an early candidate for the queer romance of the year.
