The third and last season of Brandon Kirby’s web series I’m Fine about the dating lives of a group of gay millennials in LA , gets back on track after a shaky 2nd season. Gone is all the whining (well, most of it) as the characters get more positive and proc-active in finding a Mr Right. Or in Nicole’s (Brittney King0 case as she now entertains a previously unexplored interest in women she think she may have found her Miss Right.
With the first series coming out in 2015, you either need an excellent memory for the plot lines and dramas to date, or you;ll have binge re-watch the previous series so as not to get too confused with who’s who and who’s no longer dating who.
The LA that Kirby shows us is bursting full of opportunities for a contemporary gay crowd, but that seems to serve to confuse them more often than not. Monogamy in this world seems to be ignored, usually out of fear, but more often from the sheer dread of loneliness which plays such a major part in all their lives.
Andy (Richard Stokes) and Brian (Ulysses Morazan) stop ignoring each other since their break uo and now seriously consider becoming a throuple; Jeff (Lee Doud) needs to deal with some childhood demons before he can accept himself and fully commit to his relationship with Zachary (Will Branske) ; Mick (Frankie A. Rodriguez) hurls himself at the dating scene with such ferocity before he realizes what he really wants.
However the biggest change is with Nate (Perry Powell) the main protagonist who at the beginning of the series was trying to convince himself and everybody that he was over his breakup when he patently wasn’t. Now a new confident Nate finds himsef unsexoectedk smitten with someone older and wiser who offers him the possibility of changing his life upside down.
Kirby refused to wrap it all up neatly so we are left dangling as to what will happen next with all of them …….maybe he wants another series after all.
The writing is so much better again and has a spirited kick with its generous dose of wit and humor. How much of I’m Fine truly reflects 20-something-year-old gay men’s lives in LA is debatable, but regardless of that its a interesting take on life which makes for compelling viewing anyway.
