It’s probably a sure gone conclusion that if you are watching this soul-seeking musical drama from singer/songwriter Matt Zarley that you probably qualify as a romantic yourself. Hopeful or hopeless. Which is a very good thing as this 17 minutes of sheer delight will be entirely wasted on you if you’ve not been in and out of a similar predicament/mess that Matt’s character known solely as ‘The Romantic’ is about to wind his way through now. With very little dialogue he sings us rather speedily through the first date, to moving in together, right through to exchanging rings. Sitting on the couch cosily together watching a corny TV game show together ….. life simply couldn’t be more rosy ….. until the bombshell. The Boyfriend blurts out ‘I don’t love you anymore’.
Will The Romantic fall apart, get over it, move on or beg him to return? Luckily his best friend hooks him up with a Life Coach (played by a very sage George Takei) so he, and the music, will help guide us through the rest of the journey.
There is a real warm old fashioned feeling to the whole affair, but that’s because it is musical theater which still often gets a bad stick in the movies. Yet this highly original video, obviously a project of passion in every sense for its creator and star, is wonderfully fresh and completely exhilarating that it’s almost worth thinking about breaking up for just to experience the highs that he sang his way through.
The extremely talented Mr Zarley should be sure to share some of the applause coming his way with the rest of the crew as it was beautifully photographed and rather expertly produced.
