Colin Firth & Stanley Tucci dazzle as gay couple in Supernova

British actor turned director Harry McQueen sophomore feature film SUPERNOVA has just had its World Premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival this week.   The movie has entered as it stars Academy Award winner Colin Firth and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci  as a  long time gay couple grappling with a dementia diagnosis

They play Sam and Tusker who have been together for 20 years and are on vacation travelling across England in a camper van.  Tusker (Tucci) had been diagnosed with young-onset dementia two years ago  and since then their lives have had to change.

Their time together is now the most important thing they have. As the trip progresses however, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide, and their plans and aspirations begin to unravel.

This is Firth’s first gay role as although he starred in the gay classic Another Country alongside Rupert Everett, his character was actually straight. Tucci on the other hand has been gay for pay several times before most noticeably as the Fashion Director in The Devil Wears Prada.   In The Pelican Brief we saw him sneaking into a gay porn theater to murder a judge; he was a very camp French Duke in A Little Chaos;  and in a role we are sure he’d rather forget , Tucci was Cher’s queer right hand man in her dreadful Burlesque movie

The Guardian  Newspaper covering the premiere of Supernova writes that Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci dazzle as a couple facing their fears  with vely, heartfelt performances

We will have to wait awhile before we can see for ourselves : word is that Studio Canal will release it November 22nd . Watch this space.
