Queeguru first came across queer Canadian Filmmaker Graham Kolbeins some 6 years ago when we reviewed their rather wonderful film Queer Japan, which took a look at the sheer diversity of their LGBTQ community. We wrote then that they had set themselves an impossible task in making this. Now, after just literally reeling from watching their latest film, RETRIBUTION, we really think that was quite an understatement. Kolbeins not only possesses a ridiculously vivid imagination but also a deep-rooted passion for how the world as we know it is being led on an unchecked journey of self-destruction. We are in awe of the tale that Kolbeins has obviously poured his heart into, but deeply worried that parts of their extreme apocalyptic plot may actually turn into reality.
The film follows “Graham,” a non-binary activist who transforms into a 200-foot giant and unleashes poetic justice across the fascist United States of America. Using Sora 2 and Kling 2.5, Retribution leans into the glitchy instability of “AI slop” to reimagine the revenge thriller as a queer spectacle of liberation– crushing ICE agents, demolishing OpenAI’s empire, and turning generative technology back on the forces that weaponize it.
Kolbiein, who stars in the film with their husband, trans filmmaker Jonathan Andre Culliton, told us Retribution is deliberately unpolished, angry, and irreverent. They didn’t warn us that it is as scary as hell
Here’s the trailer of the 9-minute film which will be released FREE on YouTube on November 24th …. please go watch and share https://youtu.be/T7yWge4KxLI
PS One of the (many?) things that QUEERGURU agrees with Kolbiens is the fact that in the end IT WILL TAKE A QUEER PERSON TO SAVE THE WORLD.
