Although NETFLIX strikes gold more often than not with its programming : think House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, The Crown etc , it also trips up with some ‘what-were-they-thinking’ shows. Like the ill-fated Aj + The Queen which showed that maybe Ru Paul really should stick to just doing Drag Race.
Now we have come across another case of dumbing-down scheduling resulting what the producers have envisaged a sexy new series but which is in reality one big turn-off.
You’ll know that despite all the hype in the queer media about the Magic Mike film, it was so heteronormative, and that whilst middle-aged women screamed, every homo we knew just yawned. Just parading a few sets of naked abs is simply not enough these days. And even more annoying is when the actors are applauded for being ‘so brave’ for taking on roles that required them to be semi-naked.
Netflix’s take on this is Toy Boy a mini-series from Spain about a male stripper called Hugo who is serving 15 years for the murder of his lover’s husband. He claims he cannot remember what happened BUT he knows he is totally innocent. He maybe , but he, like the rest of the cast, are definitely guilty of hammy acting.
The first episode is a feature length pilot and starts with Hugo and some of his strippers surprising a girls-only-party with a gyrating routine . It leaves one lost for words. Talking of which everybody keeps referring to Hugo’s escorting activities as prostitution. Something must have got lost in the translation
Anyway you can always make your own mind up, as below is the preview. Its the original Spanish as version as the Netflix one is poorly dubbed too.
