One of the (many) things that Queerguru loves about the UK’s QUEER EAST FILM FESTIVAL is after its London run it takes its show on the road. This impressive three-month nationwide tour, takes a selection of Asian queer cinema to big screens across the country, along with Q&As, conversations, and networking events.
Celebrating its fifth year, QUEER EAST has established itself as one of the most recognised platforms for boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ cinema and moving image work about East and Southeast Asian queer communities. With its most ambitious and largest-scale program ever, this year’s Tour reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to diversifying the cultural landscape in the UK, nurturing dialogue on the multifaceted understandings of what it means to be Asian and queer today.
On the Road will visit 15 cities which literally cover the length ahd breadth of the UK including Exeter, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Edinburgh, Brighton, Cambridge, Bradford, Kent, and Sheffield.
One of the films that is playing as part of the Fest is I AM WHAT I AM. This coming-out-story from Japanese filmmaker Shinya Tamada is about familial pressures on Kamata (Toku Miura)…… seemingly a-sexual to have an arranged marriage. This coming from her own familly who have never been successful in their own marriages, yet despite this, insist that she still conform to ‘the norm’. We rarely see the subject of asexual identity. on the screen and I Am What I Am superbly depicts the difficulties of having no romantic feelings in a world where love rules supreme.
